Up until a year or so ago, I had not realized how hurtful and judgmental the word “committed” sounds when saying a person committed suicide. My friend Andrea taught me we should say the person “died by suicide” if we feel the need to state the cause of death. We need to educate ourselves to not use words that create more hurt.
